All About Depression Treatments

Depression can occur in any stage of an individual’s life. No matter how old are you, it does not spare you. When you are young, depression can leave a big mark of psychological and social scars that you will forever put up with. SSRIs There are many kinds of SSRIs such as Zoloft (sertraline), Celapro (escitalopram), and the famous Prozac (flouxetine). These biological treatments work by giving an individual high concentrations of serotonin which fight their depressed moods. SSRIs are the most considered antidepression treatment because of their gentle side effects aside from the fact that it is the medication with the widest effect on the symptoms showed by depression.

Finally, electroconvulsive therapy is only being used when a severe depression has not responded to the above treatments. Electroconvulsive therapy or ECT works by electrically inducing seizures for therapeutic effects. This is done only when all other treatments are not helping. This treatment is very quick and effective and is very helpful in situation such as catatonic depression where in the patient is failing to take any kinds of food which can ultimately outcome to death. It is also very helpful in situation where suicide is seen as hope to come out from a depression. When situations are on a helpless mode, that is the only time that ECT is used since it’s effects are not yet fully studied.

Psychotherapy, biological treatments, and electroconvulsive therapies are just part of depression treatments that can help people with depression. There are also alternative means of treating depression. Acupuncture, exercise, and music therapy are part of this alternative treatment. Acupuncture helps in treating people with depression by its capability to make the body produce high level of endorphins which gives the body a feeling of well-being. Exercise functions by producing physiological effects that help contradict depression. It is also helpful in reducing stress which can be a factor for depression. And finally, music therapy helps by the ability of music to provoke different set of moods. Studies have revealed that there are certain areas in the brain particularly the sub-cortical centers that are reached by music. This helps depression by breaking off unhealthy emotions. There are many depression treatments available. It’s a matter of how you call for help.
